Within minutes of the reveal, Photoshop artists and meme accounts seized on the stark contrast between Johnson's hyper-muscular physique and his buoyant new curls. The resulting wave of imagery spanned several distinct comedic subgenres.

The most widely shared edits compared Johnson to 1980s stadium rock royalty. One viral post on X juxtaposed Maui with Whitesnake frontman David Coverdale, while another placed Johnson alongside guitar virtuoso Eddie Van Halen during the 1984 tour. Other creators opted for musical divas, framing Johnson’s wide smile and windblown locks against peak-era Tina Turner performing "What's Love Got to Do with It."

Wrestling fans joined the fray by unearthing archival footage of Johnson’s legendary 1996 Survivor Series debut, framing the Maui wig as the ultimate conclusion to his infamous fanny-pack-and-turtleneck era. Others took an everyday approach: comparing the actor's silhouette to damp commercial mop heads, heirloom sheepdogs, and late-night infomercials for volumizing shampoo. The juxtaposition of an intimidating 260-pound frame topped with salon-grade bounce provided infinite fuel for community remix culture.
